Folk Dance Australia FDA OBJECTIVES:
|
|
Again we gathered from far and wide to enjoy the dancing, food and friendship in misty Bowral. Annesley is a delightful place to stay and, with the new owner (John), there are many changes happening in the way of renovations - beautiful mellow lit chandeliers and warm colours. So when we go back next year, I am sure we will be pleasantly surprised.
André's selection of dances was inspiring and the circle of dancers has never been so big (90 people on the Saturday). There was much enthusiasm, beginning with the rousing warm-up music.
Sorry! I can't concentrate any more – I am on my way to Bulgaria!
Looking forward to seeing you all again at the FDA workshop at the end of September.
Happy days.
Sandra Bassetti, President
Wouldn't it be good when you are visiting another folk dance group or getting together with other folk dance groups for performance or social activities if you knew what dances the groups had in common?
Dr Gillian Polack of ACT suggested that having a "master list" of dances common to all groups and circulating this back to all groups in Australia would provide this information. Not only did she come up with the idea, she has also offered to collate this list.
She needs YOUR help… Would you nominate someone in your group to write down / print off all the dances your group knows and send this list to Gillian? She will go through each list and match dances common to all lists and send these back to you for you to keep on file and/or to distribute to the wanderers in your group. Ideally she will receive lists from ALL groups in ALL states.
Please post your list to:
Dr Gillian Polack
37 Melrose Mews
Medley St
Chifley ACT 2606
or
email her at: gillian@dynamite.com.au
if possible by 15th September, 1998.
Gillian has also offered to update this list over time as groups expand their repertoire.
PLEASE NOTE: Chris will be happy to display leaflets, programmes and posters from clubs in and around Sydney, so that the people who attend this course can see what dance groups are available if they wish to continue folk dancing. Any material you want Chris to display, please send to him at:
35 Maranoa St, AUBURN 2144.

The dances and tunes have all been composed by John Garden in various century old styles and are intended to fit each other like a glove. Indeed, the book and CDs are perfect companions (e.g. the numbers in the book correspond exactly with the tracks on the CD) and together offer dance leaders, dancers and musician a valuable resource. The combination of dance description, tune notation and recorded music offer maximum flexibility. If a group does not have musicians to play for them, they can use the CDs as music to fit the dances. If a group does have musicians, the musicians can use the combination of the CDs and manuscript to learn and play the appropriate tunes.
John's dances are expertly crafted, flow flawlessly, have fun dimensions and are well described- while his very experienced dance band goes beyond traditional boundaries, mixing medieval and modern instruments and blending Anglo-Celtic, Central European, Latin American and Middle Eastern melodic, harmonic and rhythmic styles, to produce new and exhilarating music.
The 2CDs and Book ($37 and $12.95 respectively) will be available as a set for a special launch price of only $39.95.

Earthly Delights Launch
FDA members, families and friends are invited to a very special event- the launch on Sunday 13th September (7:30-11:30pm), at the grand and historic Albert Hall in Canberra, of an attractive new dance book (A Book of Earthly Delights) and gloriously sounding double CD set (A Box of Earthly Delights). Sit in comfort and enjoy the concert (there will be tables and chairs all around the hall) or dance away on a wonderful dance floor (no partner is necessary and all dances will be led).
On stage will be the full recording line-up of Earthly Delights: John Garden (lute-back hurdy-gurdy, border bagpipes and flutes) Ian Blake (soprano saxophone, bass clarinet and recorders) Laszlo Lakk, (transylvanian viola, citera, guitar, cello) Julian Thompson (cello and bouzouki) Simon Kravis (bouzouki) Jonathon Jones (congas, bodhran, darabuka and snare drum). On the floor in the breaks will be dance displays.
The cost is only $10 at the door (children free!) and includes a great buffet supper!

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side, of course. Colonel Sanders says, "I missed one?". A café in Texas, the "RoadKill Café", advertises on its menu "Chicken … $3.95 (that didn't cross the road)". |
Keep Sunday, 20th September, 1998 free for a delightful mix of folk dance cultures – Serbian in the morning and most likely Indonesian in the afternoon. Djordje Nikolic will present the Serbian dances and will have the music available on the day.
As soon as our guest teacher for the afternoon (sorting out of the visa) and the venue is confirmed, Bronwyn will send flyers to your folk dance group for distribution, or you can contact her on 02 4757 2441.

Dances were taught, music was played, people danced, laughed, swooned, sighed, groaned, danced some more, made new acquaintances, feasted, staggered back to their hotel or, for those who had the energy, continued on to the "after party" party. It was such a special occasion to be dancing with close to 200 people from Canada, Japan, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Australia and Hawaii. The Hawaiian International Folk Dance group were most hospitable hosts. They meet on Sunday evenings from 7pro to 9pm. So when you're in Hawaii, go pay them a visit.
The live music that accompanied most of the workshop dances and the evening dance parties was wonderful, whether it was one instrument or the whole group on full throttle, it was enough to bring you out in goosebumps. Add to that the singing of several of the musicians and, at times, everyone joining in was pure magic. Nina singing unaccompanied while we all danced a dance she had taught was another special moment. The dance leaders great display of expressive creativity and flair with scarves (and, in some instances, serviettes for the Greek dances at the dinner parties) was just breath taking.
Hironobu taught a Japanese dance at the Friday night banquet and all the Japanese wore their beautiful National costumes which added to the colour and dignity of the occasion.
The party wouldn't have been complete without a French Canadian dance which was taught by Lise Sirianni who had everyone up on the floor.
At the welcome Yves paid tribute to many people who had made major contributions to folk dance during his career. Margaret Walker was one of the people mentioned as she was instrumental in bringing Yves to Australia in 1981 for the first of many visits.
Carol Maddocks, Jo Spinks, Janet Romanis and Samara Ballantyne were present from Sydney and, after reading a limerick to Yves, Carol presented him with a collection of greetings from several Australian groups. Jo, Janet and Samara then gave a very polished performance of Hungarian dances.
Carol McNally and Margaret Weeden represented CIFDA. Unfortunately a family crisis called Margaret back to Canberra before the festivities had begun.
The New York group composed and sang a song accompanied by Karl playing guitar about being old at 50 and over the hill! The Japanese group also sang a song for Hironobu when translated said that age 50 is being at the peak of manhood! Yves eldest daughter, Catherine, played Japanese and French Canadian pieces of music on the flute while younger daughter Marie-Helene (aged 7) sang very sweetly, both were accompanied by Karl.
The finale was a luau and closing dance at Kualoa Ranch - Molii Garden on the eastern side of the island where we were entertained with Hawaiian music and dance. It was a fun day as we were all transported to the ranch in those yellow America school buses with Yves taking on the role of head student reading the riot act about behaviour on buses. Yves' sense of humour is alive and well as always.
Congratulations and thanks to France & Yves on a very successful, unforgettable celebration and get together. Thoughtful consideration and endless hours of planning and organising by them and their team was much appreciated. Merci beaucoup!
Beautiful Hawaii - interesting history - lively atmosphere - friendly people -melodious music - expressive dancing - spectacular scenery - wonderful climate - great food - especially good coffee and THE BEST BUSES.
If you don't want to miss out on the next party for Yves & Hironobu in Honolulu on 17-20 July 2048 mark your diaries now. ….Aloha!

It's July, and that means André and also dancing the weekend away at Bowral. And we did.
We members of CIFDA are a diverse group but united in dance enthusiasm. After the weekend this is how I see it. We start our normal dance nights with easy dances, both for the benefit of beginners and as a warm up and are, therefore, always looking for new additions to this part of the program. We can now add Hora de Nunta, Ciranda, Idam ne Idam, and Kasatsjak. We don't dance many couple dances but a dance like Kasatsjak which everyone does with a smile on their face has to be a plus.
There is a little dedicated group of Israeli addicts; they got three new dances, including the exciting Sana'a, which I believe everyone will love. Then there is an equally addicted band of Bulgarian dance lovers; they got the easy and beautiful Idam ne Idam and the more challenging Jovino Horo (and Monday in Canberra added Tropanka) so they should be well satisfied. We already do a Japanese dance which is enjoyed, so will be happy to add the new one, a more complex dance than the one we are doing now.
And who can resist the music of Romania just made to move to? It seems clear to me that we at CIFDA have got much to enjoy from this weekend workshop and had an excellent time and a lot of fun being at Bowral, learning the dances and meeting up again with many other members of the folkdance family we are all part of.

You'd have to be mad to go to the Southern Highlands for a weekend in the middle of winter. A colder, wetter, windier, greyer weekend could not be imagined.
But, at the Folk Dance Weekend with André van de Plas, the jumpers came off and sweat poured as the hours flew by and 90 dancers learned 11 dances from many different countries in a day and a half.
It is an abiding interest of mine to discover how many different ways one could walk. There was enough variety in rhythm, style and choreography to strain the brain. It was the first time I had done a dance from Japan and that one was delightful. But it was also fun to do an American dance and feel the familiarity of its rhythms.
André's teaching ability is exemplary and the frequent revision of previously learned dances eventually etched the patterns deeply in my memory. With his book of instructions , tape and video, I should retain most of what I learnt.
Because this was my first time at Bowral, I was one of the few with a hot water bottle. I slept very well between the crispest white sheets ever; the food was nearly perfect; the organisation of the dancing, the accommodation and everything was just so efficient – gold stars all around!
Next time I must remember to cut my toe nails before I go!
